Add News

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon is known all over the world for its famous plays and productions of William Shakespeare’s Plays with such productions from “Macbeth” to “The Merchant of Venice” to name just a few.

Now the Royal Shakespeare Theatre has won a prestigious award for architecture, The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has recognised and honoured the famous theatres transformation and architectural excellence by winning a top architecture award.

In addition, the RST has also been short listed for the Stirling Prize one of the top and most honoured accolades in architectural design

The Stirling prize is named after the architect James Stirling and the RIBA awards and honours the architects of the building that they regard has made the most significant contribution to British architecture in that particular year. To be considered for the award the architects must be members of the RIBA and the building can be located anywhere in the European Union.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre has recently undergone a major refurbishment and transformation programme at a cost of some £113 million and the award from the RIBA has acknowledged this as a great achievement in architectural design.

RIBA West Midlands regional chairperson commented on the award for the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre and said that the building has been designed with a lot of thought and it completely enhanced a part of Stratford upon Avon that the local residents of the town really cherished.

What the RIBA were really impressed with was the way the new theatre had managed to retain Elisabeths Scotts grade II listed facade and foyer, and the design and implementation of the new auditorium that incorporates and features the new thrust stage specially designed to bring the audience and the stage players closer together

and can comfortably seat up to 1,040 people.

The RIBA judges also praised the firm of architects responsible for the new design of the building Bennetts Associates Architects for their thoughtful planning of the new building. The RIBA paid particular respect to the tower at the RST which stands at an impressive 36 metres or 118ft and the way that the architects had managed to make the new design relate to its surroundings with the main highlight been the widening of the riverside walk.

RSC executive director Vikki Heywood was delighted at the award from the RIBA. Ms Heywood commented that for the RIBA to recognise the new RST as a building of architectural excellence was fantastic news, not only for the RSC but also for all the people that had put so much effort into the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre and for the whole of the midlands as well.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the New Royal Shakespeare Theatre back in March this year and this was closely followed by a visit by Prince Charles to the new theatre on Saturday April 30th.

Prince Charles who happens to be the RSC president and was at the Theatre to attend the 50th Birthday Gala Performance of “Macbeth”

The New Royal Shakespeare Theatre has also had other features added or re-designed as for the direct Colonade, which now links the RST to the Swan Theatre plus as a visitor you, may want to take lunch in the new restaurant or a drink in the four bars and the café. Alternatively, take a trip up the New Tower where at the top you will get spectacular views of Stratford upon Avon and the Warwickshire countryside.

Funding for the redevelopment and transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre came from public funding and a number of charitable organisations like the Lottery commission or the Arts Council.
