With the Olympic Games only just over six months away it might be worth considering applying for a job at the Olympics

Stratford city will play a major part in the 2012 Olympics and this huge development project will bring not only 30,000 jobs to Stratford 15,000 of those in construction but 5,000 new homes as well

 

Stratford city will be a massive development when it is completed and will include 4,850 new homes that will house some 11,000 people in addition at the site their will be 150,500 that will be allocated as retail space and up to 2,000 hotel bedrooms.

Work at the Stratford city development began back in 2006 although it is expected to take 20yrs in total part of this massive site will be for the Olympic village and the respective games in 2012.After the games the Olympic village will be converted into permanent residences or homes for the people of London

The timeline for the Stratford City Development involved construction of the city back in 2006, then in 2007 the Stratford Channel Tunnel Rail Link station was opened, with the town centre completed in 2009.

The transformation of Stratford into Stratford City is a huge regeneration project and will create a major new piece of city in London. It is expected when fully completed to attract new businesses and new homes as well with the state of the art transport connections that includes an international rail link and with it bring employment and jobs to the community in Stratford and respectively to the entire East London community as well

Further development will take place after the Olympics Games right up to the year 2020 the expected completion date.

 

Jobs at the Olympics:

Also at this new development, expect new schools nursery facilities games areas plus a visitor information centre public administration services and security offices, civic offices, places of worship and community groups. In addition, some 120 shops bars and cafes will be built including department stores with some 140,000 square meters of shopping

Therefore, to construct, eventually run, and maintain this new development you can expect thousands of jobs in Stratford to be created from construction/ building jobs to catering/hospitality jobs through to IT/Internet jobs.

In addition the 2012 Olympics will need people to run the games so that means logistics/supply chain jobs and catering and cleaning staff as well driving/transport jobs for the new rail –link. In fact, it is estimated that 6,000 full time jobs will be created and that 100,000 people will be paid to work at the games in total.

Therefore, the job opportunities are wide and varied, as you would expect with all the new stadiums to be built including all the staff needed to run the Olympic village.

Therefore, jobs in Enviromental/Security jobs will be available to ensure that everyone visiting or taking part in the games and working at the Olympics do so in a safe and secure environment. Jobs such as CCTV operators, event stewards and duty managers, and searching and screening officers will be needed.

Hundreds of jobs in retail will also be on offer at the games ranging from Retail managers to sales supervisors and sales assistant’s jobs to make sure the masses of merchandise from badges to toys and jewellery will be on sale at the stores in 2012.

Cleaning staff probably in the thousands will be required to make sure everything from kitchens and toilets to the general environment that both competitors and visitors will inhabit are kept hygienically clean and tidy.

As mentioned before the catering and hospitality sector will also feature heavily in the jobs market, as an estimated 14 million meals in over 40 locations will have to be catered for.

So expect jobs for Chefs, food service assistants, bar staff, kitchen assistants will be required, also waiters and reception staff to meet and greet visitors to the games.

Construction jobs ranging from builders to surveyors, electricians, and plumbers to decorators and so on will also be on offer.

Summer jobs in Stratford will also be on the agenda, although only on a temporary basis for the course of the games what better way for a student to finance his or hers university fees by getting a summer job at the Olympics.

Jobs at the Olympics are not all about manual skilled labour so in order that the games opening and closing ceremonies run smoothly and the overall organisation of the games keeps to its schedules jobs such as Production Coordinators and costume workshop staff will be needed. In addition, jobs as Deputy stage managers Transport coordinators and travel team coordinators to stage managers will also be in big demand.

The Cultural Olympiad: The Cultural Olympiad is another part of the games and will be spread over four years. It is a celebration in fact one of the largest in the history of the games and is geared and designed to give everyone a chance in the UK to be a part of the great Olympic Games in 2012.

At the Cultural Olympiad, expect to see all sorts of events from Music to Film and Digital exhibitions to Art and Literature. Their will also be Dance, Comedy and Theatre to Outdoor events and Galleries and Museums.

The Music celebrations will include and give fourteen to eighteen year olds the chance to celebrate the Olympic Games through song. On show will also be 20 new works of original music all inspired by the games. At the Film and Digital strand of the Cultural Olympiad, expect to see short films that have been made by young people and these will be screened at the games as well as a animated film. As for the art section, expect to see a series of photos tracking the journey from beginning to the 2012 games.

In fact the World Shakespeare Festival will form part of the Cultural Olympiad next year (part of the culmination been the London 2012 Festival) respectively produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company based in Stratford upon Avon,

 

Some Facts about Stratford.

Stratford is part of the London Borough of Newham and is located some six miles east northeast of Charing Cross and makes up the district of West Ham.

The area was transformed into an industrial suburb back in 1839 following the introduction of the railway. As expected back in the 18 to 19th century, London was rapidly expanding so Stratford also significantly increased and expanded in population and soon became the Borough of West Ham and the centre of administration for that area in 1886.

Stratford has formed part of Greater London since 1965 and has a history of heavy industry and railway works. However, more recently Stratford has become a cultural and commercial centre for Greater London.

Stratford in now currently experiencing massive regeneration and expansion all respectively linked to the Olympics Games in 2012.

Therefore, there is a massive opportunity for people who may be unemployed or looking for a permanent job or even a temporary or summer jobs at the Olympic Games in London in 2012 and the district of Stratford as a whole.
