Therefore, before you make the big step into College it is a good idea to get into good habits as far as money is concerned. As simply setting out and drawing up a budget plan for College can save you a lot of stress and headaches later on.

There are some very basic steps you can take when budgeting for College respectively as a student you will have money going out but you may also have money coming in as in the way of a part-time job say over the weekend. The main aim here is to get a balance between the two this is not always easily done because your outgoings possibly maybe over stretching you as you maybe spending more money than you have coming in(which is usually the case in a student world). This will put you into bad habits so controlling what you spend is the key and you can achieve this by trying to adhere to a basic budget.

Here are the main points of how to set up a simple budget.

Firstly, work out how much money you have coming in you can set this as weekly, monthly, or even over the entire term that you are at College. This respectively depends on where your income is coming from is it from a Job or student loans or maybe cash from parents.

Next work out your essential costs the main word here is essential so do not include such things as money you might spend in takeaways or bars and restaurants.

This is respectively all about essential spending so this will definitely include your accommodation, food costs, bills any loans, fees, travelling expenses to College plus other related costs such as money for books and equipment.

Work out these costs on a weekly or monthly basis ideally, if you have budgeted correctly then your essential costs should work out less than your income which is coming in and might even leave you a bit of cash for the fun things in life.

Now that you know how to set up a simple budget and lets face it its not rocket science but as a student we all know that it can be quite difficult to try to save money when at College when peer pressure sometimes takes over. Nights out with the lads for instance at College every weekend or even in the week, because you want to be seen as one of the lads can easily start to cut into your budget.

Tips on how to Save Money at College

Proper spending is the key when at College and one of the main pitfalls for students are credit cards, students tend to apply for credit cards without understanding how the credit system works and soon fall into bad debt. The best way to avoid this is not to get a credit card in the first place.

When considering buying those essential items for College such as, books, furniture for your bed-sit or apartment laptops and even clothing and more consider buying used or second-hand items especially when it comes to textbooks you can save hundreds of pounds if you purchase second hand books in some cases you can even rent out books.

Look for businesses that offer student discounts on electronic items like computers and software you can save a lot of money this way. In addition, try to eat most of your meals at the Student cafeteria or at the College dining hall instead of going to the local KFC or nearest takeaway. When you do want to eat out look for restaurants and local dining places that offer student discounts these are normally located near the College campus.

Use your Student ID Card as much as possible to save money on trains and public transport and when going out there are lots of places where students can get a decent discount when they present there student ID card.

Get a Job most College students need to get a part-time job over the weekend or even in the week working in bars or social clubs not only will this keep the student busy but also by getting a job you have the added benefit of a income instead of solely relying on your parents cash.

Impulse buying is another money problem for students as we mentioned before about peer pressure students sometimes will buy items so that they feel part of the crowd especially electronic items and clothing. Respectively buy what you can comfortably afford no one is telling you to go dressed like a tramp but think before you buy do I really need those £150 Nike Trainers or the latest App Phone because my best friend has those items.

If you can try to watch your favourite, Television programmes on your laptop or computer this will save you money because you will not have to buy a TV for your room.
